Bitola – Debar Thermal Bath (one hour) – Radika River – The Monastery of Saint Jovan Bigorski – Mavrovo National Park – Kicevo – Demir Hisar – Bitola

The Radika Canyon & Mavrovo Loop is a thirteen-hour round trip that explores the wild beauty of western North Macedonia through mountain roads, riverside monasteries, lakeside villages, and peaceful spa stops.

The tour begins in Bitola with a guided overview of the city’s historic heart. Visitors walk through the Old Bazaar, the Bezisten, and key religious landmarks including the Clock Tower, Isak Çelebi Mosque, Yeni Mosque, and St. Demetrius Church. The stroll along Shirok Sokak promenade is followed by visits to the Catholic Church, Heart of Jesus monument, and the House of the Army. The National Museum includes a room dedicated to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and the nearby site of Heraclea Lyncestis offers a glimpse into Roman Macedonia. A short vehicle tour past the city’s historic cemeteries rounds out the first part of the day.

Leaving Bitola, the tour heads north to Debar for a one-hour visit to the town’s natural thermal baths. These mineral-rich waters are ideal for a relaxing soak before the day’s scenic and cultural highlights. The route continues through the Radika River valley, with its steep cliffs and forested slopes, until reaching the Monastery of Saint Jovan Bigorski. Known for its peaceful setting and 11th-century origins, the monastery is home to chanting monks and a hand-carved iconostasis considered one of the finest in the region.

From there, the journey climbs into Mavrovo National Park, where guests enjoy lunch in a shepherd village near the lake. This is a chance to try traditional mountain food and soak in views of wooden houses and open fields.

In the afternoon, the return journey follows a lesser-known route through Kičevo and the Demir Hisar gorge, with winding roads and quiet valleys leading back to Bitola. This tour is perfect for travelers who enjoy natural landscapes, moderate walking, and cultural sites tucked into the mountains.
