Wind mountain lanes to secluded Vitolishte, watch loom shuttles weave wool, snack on honey and cheese overlooking endless hills, then return to Bitola glowing with highland simplicity and stories.
Bitola – Vitolishte (Mariovo) – Bitola
This tour takes you on a scenic and peaceful journey into the highlands of Mariovo, ending in Vitolishte, one of the region’s highest and most secluded villages.
The day begins in Bitola with a guided walk and drive through its key landmarks. You’ll explore monuments that span centuries, from the Clock Tower and Isak Çelebi Mosque to the Old Bazaar, Shirok Sokak promenade, and the ancient city of Heraclea Lyncestis. This brief but rich introduction sets the historical tone before the road leads you into Mariovo’s wild interior.
The drive to Vitolishte follows a winding mountain route through quiet valleys and narrow serpentine roads. Along the way, the landscape changes from green hills to rocky outcrops, offering open skies and almost no traffic. Once in Vitolishte, you’ll walk through a village that feels frozen in time. Ottoman-era stone houses still stand, and locals continue to live in tune with the seasons. A highlight of the visit is a demonstration of traditional weaving techniques by one of the few remaining artisans in the area. It’s a quiet but powerful moment that speaks to the heritage of the region.
Lunch is simple and deeply local, a shepherd’s snack of homemade white cheese, mountain honey, bread, and seasonal herbs. It’s served in the open air, with views of the surrounding peaks and the distant hum of the countryside. You’ll have time to explore, take photos, or simply sit and enjoy the calm.
The return to Bitola brings you back into town just in time to see the city under its golden afternoon light. This tour is ideal for those who want to step away from busy roads and crowded landmarks. It offers the kind of quiet that’s hard to find, and a genuine glimpse into life in one of North Macedonia’s most overlooked corners.
