Begin with lake pearls, spend midday under Skopje’s fortress skyline, then boat Matka’s jade corridor to Vrelo Cave. Macedonia’s spiritual, political, and natural icons come together in one richly textured odyssey.
Ohrid - Skopje - Matka - Ohrid
This full-day circuit offers a sweeping introduction to three of North Macedonia’s most iconic destinations, Ohrid, Skopje, and Matka Canyon. It begins in the morning with a walk through Ohrid’s old town, where culture and lake views meet. You’ll explore the Filevi Pearl Workshop, the Robevi House, and the handmade paper shop before continuing to the Church of St. Sophia, the Ancient Macedonian Theatre, and Plaoshnik. The path ends with panoramic views from Samuel’s Fortress and the postcard-perfect Church of St. John at Kaneo, perched above the water.
After this rich opening, the tour shifts gears with a scenic drive across the country toward the capital, Skopje. Once there, you’ll get a curated overview of the city’s main sights. Walk across the Stone Bridge into the main square, where modern sculptures and monuments share space with Ottoman heritage. The Old Bazaar offers a completely different pace, with narrow lanes, small shops, mosques, and hammams giving a sense of the city’s layered past. Lunch is served at a traditional tavern in the bazaar, offering classic Macedonian dishes in a relaxed setting.
From Skopje, the road leads west to Matka Canyon, a narrow, peaceful gorge carved by the Treska River. You’ll take a short boat ride through the canyon to reach Vrelo Cave, one of the deepest underwater caves in Europe. The natural setting offers a refreshing break before the return drive to Ohrid.
Though the route covers long distances, the pacing is smooth and well-balanced. You’ll experience a lakeside morning, an urban midday, and a nature-filled afternoon, all in one carefully planned loop. This tour is ideal for travelers who want to see the country’s cultural contrasts and natural beauty in a single, memorable day. All you need is a good pair of shoes and a sense of curiosity.
