Climb volcanic thrones where Bronze-Age astronomers tracked solstices, watch sunrise align with ancient markers, then lunch in Kumanovo bazaar. Sky lore, rugged geology, and Balkan kebapi meet spectacularly for explorers.
Bitola – Kokino – Kumanovo – Bitola
This full-day tour takes you deep into the past and far into the stars with a visit to one of North Macedonia’s most mysterious sites, Kokino, the Bronze Age observatory. The day begins with a comfortable drive from Bitola through the rolling hills and valleys of the north, ending near the village of Kokino, close to Kumanovo. After a moderate uphill walk, you reach a plateau of jagged volcanic rocks where ancient people once observed the movements of the sun, moon, and stars.
Kokino is more than just a viewpoint, it’s a carefully aligned stone structure, over 3,800 years old, believed to have been used for marking the solstices, equinoxes, and lunar cycles. Your guide will explain how the stone “thrones” and marker cuts line up with celestial events, making Kokino one of the oldest known observatories in the world. If the tour is timed for early morning, you may even witness how the sunrise interacts with the stone markers just as it did millennia ago.
After exploring the site and enjoying the wide-open views, the tour continues to Kumanovo for a relaxed city walk. You’ll pass through the central square, local market streets, and cultural landmarks before sitting down for a kebapi lunch, small grilled sausages served with fresh bread and mild peppers, a local favorite.
If the group returns after dark and the skies are clear, the guide may lead a short stargazing session near Bitola, using a laser pointer to identify constellations and visible planets. This final segment adds a fitting end to a day spent connecting ancient knowledge with today’s sky.
This tour is perfect for travelers who enjoy archaeology, mythology, astronomy, and quiet mountain settings. It’s both educational and awe-inspiring, offering a glimpse into the shared sky that links the past and present.
