Ohrid - Vevčani Waterfalls - St. Jovan Bigorski - Ohrid
This day trip combines the natural beauty of North Macedonia’s western mountains with a visit to one of its most important spiritual landmarks. The tour begins in Ohrid with a guided walk through the old town’s historical treasures. You’ll visit the Filevi Pearl Workshop, Robevi House, the handmade paper shop, and iconic churches such as St. Sophia and St. John at Kaneo. With these cultural highlights setting the tone, the journey then heads north toward the village of Vevčani.
Vevčani is known for its springs and waterfalls, fed by underground karst systems flowing from the Jablanica mountain range. A walk through the upper part of the village leads you to a network of paths and bridges that crisscross the cascades, with views framed by tall beech trees and moss-covered rocks. The setting is peaceful and slightly wild, offering a soft adventure that rewards you with fresh air, birdsong, and the sound of running water. There’s also time to explore the village itself, known for its unique local humor, festivals, and preserved traditional homes.
After a short tea break featuring wild herbs gathered from the surrounding hills, the tour continues through the Drim valley, passing rivers, cliffs, and villages tucked into the slopes. The destination is the Monastery of St. Jovan Bigorski, a masterpiece of Macedonian Orthodox architecture. Here, you’ll explore intricately carved iconostasis panels, centuries-old relics, and frescoes that bring biblical stories to life. The atmosphere is quiet and contemplative, making it one of the most memorable spiritual sites in the region.
The day ends with a return to Ohrid, following the curves of the mountain road back to the lake. This tour is ideal for travelers who want a mix of nature and culture, with light walking and a thoughtful pace throughout.
